MAKING ROOMS FOR LIVING

What a Difference Curating Makes

This is not your grandma's wallpaper:
As we all know, wallpaper is having a resurgence!
I love wallpaper for so many reasons—
…it creates movement and drama …it makes a space cozier …it "fills in space" (if you know what i mean)…it let's you have multiple colors in your palate without having to afford a complex scheme of multiple fabrics AND, like all things today, the takes on the traditional versions are much more daring, verbose, and sometimes just downright fun! For instance, the Timorous Beasties Chinoiserie that is being installed in Olivia's playroom right now is a totally modern take on a traditional pattern …stay tuned for pics-coming soon!
In these three bedrooms, I not only used the same bed and the same bed linens, but also the same chandelier. But, as you see, these three rooms could not look and feel more different. To rethink objects you already have, pick a statement piece and curate the area around it. In each of these three rooms, the statement area is the backdrop of the room.
AT PARK AVENUE,
the David Hicks carpet in chartreuse and cream wool and silk gives pattern and the overall backdrop focus and movement to the floor. I painted the walls and the ceiling in a custom white so they fade away. The wall of antique mirrors adds some vertical drama and again, I used the same kitschy bedside tables, but add the chartreuse feather pillows, keeping a sophisticated yet unexpected feel. The art over the bed adds to the subdued drama that is created in this room.

AT 12th STREET, I use a very bold yellow to make the pieces
feel more hip and young. The bed, the chandelier, and the
bedside lamps could all go in a very old lady direction, but this
screaming yellow color screams NOT! In this room, I chose not
to put any art over the bed and just use art around the room.
AT MADISON AVENUE, the birdcage wallpaper is clearly what the room is all about. Because the wallpaper is so busy, I chose to streamline the bedside tables and lamps. I am still using the same chandelier and bed, but don't they totally feel like different pieces of furniture? When I couldn't find the perfect piece of art for over the bed, I decided what would be perfect and just had it made myself! I wanted to add a little bit of edge to this room, so I had a custom neon sign made in exactly the size I wanted.
